Abstract: We introduce a class of differential-variational systems which we call differential variational inequalities (DVIs). A DVI comprises of an ordinary differential equation (ODE) parameterized by an algebraic variable required to be a solution of a finite-dimensional variational inequality, which provides a unified formulation for a constrained optimization and a host of economic and game-theoretic equilibrium problems. Thus, the DVI connects the classical domain of ODEs with contemporary mathematical programming, whose treatment goes beyond these two disciplines alone. The presentation is intended to introduce a non-expert to this new paradigm of dynamical systems and convey the essence of this class of mathematical problems and the motivation to study them, focusing on conceptual ideas and issues and omitting much of the technical details.
