Abstract: The challenging unsolved problem in the theory of integrable partial differential equations is to find conditions that are formulated in inherent terms of a PDE under study and ensure existence of a Lax representation. The talk will present the technique for constructing Lax representations of PDEs via non-central extensions of their contact symmetry algebras generated by non-trivial exotic 2-cocycles. Examples will include Lax representations with non-removable spectral parameters. Also it will be shown that natural extensions of the symmetry algebras produce the integrable hierarchies associated to their PDEs.
