Title: Stability of Prandtl Boundary Layers

Abstract: In this talk, we shall survey our recent study on the stability of the Prandtl boundary layers in small viscosity limit of the incompressible viscous flow near a physical boundary. Both of the two dimensional and three dimensional problems will be investigated. We develop an energy approach for the well-posedness of the two-dimensional Prandtl boundary layer equations under the Olineik monotonicity assumption. For the three-dimensional Prandtl equations, we first give an instability criterion on the shear flow, then we obtain a well-posedness result of the three-dimensional nonlinear Prandtl equations for a special flow, which shows that the three-dimensional Prandtl boundary layer is stable if and only if the tangential flow direction in the layer is invariant with respect to the normal variable of the boundary.
