Abstract: In 1928-9 the great fluid dynamist Prandtl raised a question concerning shock wave reflections off a supersonic flying object. The problem was picked up by von Neumann in a Panel Discussion he chaired in 1949. There were heated exchanges among the participants, which include Heisenberg, von Karman, Burgers, Lippmann, among others. Against this historical background I will talk about recent mathematical advances in multi-dimensional gas flows, in particular my join works with Volker Elling. I hope to convey the point that analytical difficulty is one thing; the difficulty in mathematically formulating a scientific question is another. I will also mention some opens problem for future research.
