Title: Coalescing Turning Points and Painleve Transcendents

Abstract: 1. In this talk, I will introduce the uniform approximation method developed by Bassom, Clarkson, Law and McLeod in 1998, which is essentially Olver's method (1974) for coalescing turning points. This method gives a simpler and rigorous solution to the connection problem of the second Painleve equation (PII). I will use the same method to show that one can also provide simpler and more rigorous proofs of the connection problems for the sine-Gordon PIII equation and the Clarkson-McLeod solution for the fourth Painleve transcendent.
