Gromov's cancellation question in algebraic geometry

Abstract : I explain some cancellation and non-cancellation phenomena in algebraic geometry and relate them to the structure of the Grothendieck ring of varieties and to the groups of birational self-maps of algebraic varieties, in particular the Cremona groups. This is an overview of the work of many people, including Hassett--Lai, Kontsevich--Tschinkel, and Lin--Shinder.
