Abstract:
Thermo-osmosis is a fluid flow along solid surfaces induced by nonuniform temperature distribution of the surfaces, and also known as thermal transpiration in the case of gases. The characteristics of thermo-osmosis strongly depends on the nature of fluid-surface interaction; recent molecular simulation studies have reported that the flow direction can be reversed depending on the affinity between fluid and solid molecules. In this talk, we try to develop a kinetic model of a thermal-slip boundary condition describing thermo-osmosis, under the effect of fluid-solid interaction potential. To be more specific, we apply the framework of the generalized slip-flow theory, which has been developed in the field of molecular gas dynamics, to the thermo-osmosis between two parallel plates with linear temperature profiles and with wall-normal potentials. It is found that the thermal-slip coefficients obtained by the slip-flow theory quantitatively agree with those obtained by the numerical analysis.
