A Correction to Springer's Trigonometric Sums

  • Abstract : In Section 3 of T.A. Springer’s 1976 paper Trigonometric Sums, Green Functions on Finite Groups and Representation of Weyl Groups, a reduction method is introduced for the trigonometric sum $S^G(A, A')$, bringing the computation to the nilpotent case. The formula obtained there is essentially correct, but the proof as written is not valid. In this talk, I will explain how Springer’s original insight can be carried out rigorously, by providing a revised proof that achieves the intended result.
