Dehn surgery, 4-manifolds and anti-self-dual connections

Abstract : Given a link in the 3-sphere, Dehn surgery on this link is a construction which produces a closed oriented 3-dimensional manifold, and every 3-manifold arises in this way. It is natural to wonder how far apart the world of knots and 3-manifolds are.
I will present recent progress on Dehn surgery problems, by first connecting these problems to the study of 4-manifolds and second studying the moduli spaces of anti-self-dual connections on these 4-manifolds.
