Unstable Interfacial Mixing in Compressible Fluids, Nonlinear Analysis.

  • Abstract : Richtmyer–Meshkov instability, the shock-driven interfacial mixing between fluids of different densities, is a classical problem in fluid dynamics originating from Richtmyer’s seminal work in 1960. The instability develops into nonlinear interpenetrating structures—spikes of heavy fluid driving into light fluid and bubbles of light fluid rising into heavy fluid. Despite decades of effort, accurately predicting spike and bubble growth rates in compressible systems has remained challenging due to fluid compressibility, interface instability, and strongly nonlinear interface dynamics. Consequently, numerical simulations have been the primary tool for studying finger growth. In this talk, we present a closed-form theory for the growth of Richtmyer–Meshkov instability in compressible fluids. Our approach analyzes the full interface dynamics, derives early- and late-time closed-form solutions, and bridges them using asymptotic matching. The resulting theory contains no fitting parameters and applies to spikes and bubbles, arbitrary density ratios, shocks of arbitrary strength, and the entire temporal evolution from early to late times. The predictions show excellent agreement with numerical simulations and experimental measurements, including cases with incident-shock Mach numbers as high as 15.3.
