Analysis Seminar

Mathematical research and education in the era of AI.

  • Date : 2026/09/22 (Tue.) 10:00~13:00
  • Location : online
  • Speaker : Shi Jin (Shanghai Jiao Tong University), Juncheng Wei (The Chinese University of Hong Kong)
  • Organizer : Tai-Ping Liu (AS)
  • Abstract : AI presents a new landscape for mathematicians in terms of both research and education. On the research front, an ever increasing list of important conjectures has been solved using AI. These include Gromov Conjecture. (4 groups of people posted the same paper on arxiv,) Milnor Conjecture, Bernstein Conjecture, Carathéodory Conjecture, Chern Conjecture. (Both SS Chern and Atiyah worked on this before they died), Hopf Conjecture, Liquid drop Conjecture, Banach Isometric Conjecture, and Brezis' open problems (17 out of 28, 15 were solved by AI), and the list goes on. Very recently, AI approaches have obtained definite results on the long standing Jacobi Conjecture in 3D and the Twin Prime Conjecture.
AI presents serious challenges to mathematicians. On the research front, one can ask: Which types of research problems are more likely to be immune from AI inputs? On the educational front, which topics should be emphasized and how should they be taught?
Prof. Jin and Prof. Wei will lead the discussion. We welcome the audience's active participation on these vital issues.
